Founded in Seattle in 1891, Washington Shoe Company began making boots to hold up against tough weather conditions during the Alaska Gold Rush.
We are a 4th generation family owned business, providing family footwear for outdoor wear. Being born and raised in Seattle, we are experts in wet weather. Our Western Chief footwear offerings range from lovable character rain boots for kids, whimsical and cozy boots for women, durable work boots for men, and more.
Washington Shoe Company is a 4th generation family owned company, and Seattle’s first shoe company. In 1891 we began making boots and shoes for outdoor workers under the Western Chief name. In 1898 added demand for our boots came with the Alaska Gold Rush, and the need for boots to hold up against tough weather conditions.
In 1996 we introduced 3D character rubber boots, and debuted our Fritz the Frog and Lucy the Ladybug rain boots. In 2022 our beloved best selling iconic boots were named one of Oprah's Favorite Things.
In 2016, wanting to make an impact in the community, the family owners launched the non-profit Wear A Big Smile Foundation. Western Chief proudly supports the Foundation which donates boots to people in need throughout our local community.
