Spring into Spring

We're a 4th generation family business with lots of heart & sole...

Born and raised in Seattle, we are experts in wet weather. Founded in 1891, Washington Shoe Company began making boots to hold up against tough weather conditions during the Alaska Gold Rush. Western Chief offerings range from lovable character rain boots for kids, whimsical and cozy boots for women, durable work boots for men, soft slippers for the family, and more.

Thank you PSBJ!

A huge thank you to the Puget Sound Business Journal!

We are thrilled and honored to have been recognized as the 2024 Family Business of the Year. 🏆

Founded in 1891

Seattle Washington

Washington Shoe Company is a 4th generation family owned business, and Seattle’s first shoe company. In 1891 we began making boots and shoes for outdoor workers under the Western Chief name. In 1898 added demand for our boots came with the Alaska Gold Rush, and the need for boots to hold up against tough weather conditions.

1996 Creating Icons

Character Boots

In 1996 we introduced 3D character rubber boots, and debuted our Fritz Frog and Lucy Ladybug rain boots. In 2022 our beloved best selling iconic boots were named one of Oprah's Favorite Things.

2016 Wear a Big Smile

Giving Back

In 2016, wanting to make an impact in the community, the family owners launched the non-profit Wear A Big Smile Foundation. Western Chief proudly supports the Foundation which donates boots to people in need throughout our local community.
